Alex Hermes on Fashion: Dressing for the Interview

By Alex Hermes

So remember in Legally Blonde when Elle to Harvard?

The first thing she did was go out and buy some cute little law school outfits! (#duh!).

As ditzy and materialistic as that may sound, she actually taught us something very important: Dress for the position you want while keeping your individuality. This is particularly important for the interview portion of auditions.

Your outfit for an interview speaks VOLUMES about your personality and style. I hate to say it, but before you even speak a word…you are being judged. How you dress and carry yourself matters at this level of the industry. There is nothing more empowering than feeling confident and beautiful. If you choose to walk in wearing something skimpy or unprofessional, then I hope you have a pretty smart mouth to back it up because you are about to have 15,000 political questions fired your way!

Keep in mind that you’re interviewing for a position as an ambassador and a spokesperson for an entire organization, so this is the time to show them how charming, professional , intelligent and well-spoken you are! No pressure 🙂

Now I’m not saying you need to go in there looking like maw-maw Moses in order to look professional. The key is to keep it simple and chic with a spice of fashionista. Your clothes can definitely help you make an impression on the judges.

General Guidelines to Follow

Dresses or Skirts Preferred:

Think feminine, not corporate. Your clothing should reflect your personality, yet show personal pride and respect towards the organization for which you are interviewing.

Nothing Too Small or Too Big:

Your outfit needs to fit you properly and be flattering (HINT: If you’re walking like Morticia from The Addams Family, the dress may be a wee bit tight).

Heels are a Must:

Something I always consider is the simplicity-to-statement ratio:

Simple outfit = Statement shoes, Statement outfit = simple shoes.

If your outfit has a print, avoid shoes that are too strappy or bright. You can’t go wrong with a classic black or nude pump. If you keep your outfit simple, then don’t be afraid to branch out and rock your favorite accent pieces. But don’t get too crazy.

Minimalist Accessories

Keep the jewelry delicate and pretty, nothing too overstated or bulky. A classic watch or bracelet, simple necklace and dainty earrings will do. I usually choose special or meaningful pieces that I don’t typically wear because it gives me a sense of comfort.

If you bring a purse in with you, choose a small clutch that adds a fun accent to your outfit.

Makeup:

Your face should be pretty and radiant. Wear a little more than you would on a normal day, but keep the colors flattering and classic, nothing too bold or dark.
