Callie’s Corner: #WorkoutWednesday with Former Dallas Sidekicks Dancers Director, Emily Scoville

Today’s #WorkoutWednesday guest article is by former Dallas Desperados Dancer, Dallas Sidekicks Dancers and Dallas Vigilantes Director, and current studio owner Emily Scoville:

Happy #WorkoutWednesday!! As a former professional dancer and dance team director turned studio owner/director, my own personal focus has shifted into just staying thin and growing young dancers into healthy dancers. Because audition season is here, I want to give you some healthy tips on looking good in the uniform you may be earning:

  • There is so much more to this than just getting “skinny” for the next audition. In other words, your health and appearance should be maintained. Every director experiences this: we get a toned, healthy dancer at auditions, and by the middle of the season, they are so burned out on maintaining that lifestyle, the uniform begins to mysteriously shrink in the closet. By that time, the dancer gets put on weight probation, and perhaps already has not made the team back for next season before auditions even begin. It’s a hard world us dancers live in, but it is the nature of the beast, and it is worth the hard work. It’s worth it because of the PASSION we have for dancing and performing in front of large crowds.
  • Fitness and health go beyond working out. Your diet is a critical part of your overall health and fitness level- and you must eat clean in order to properly fuel your body for workouts, auditions and practices! Think lean proteins, fruits and veggies, healthy fats, carbs at the correct times.
  • Change up your workouts. If you keep doing the same thing over and over again, it will not be as effective. For example, I can’t get the body I want just by teaching all my dance classes because my body is used to it. Therefore, I make an effort to change things up such as the  3 day a week bootcamp I recently signed up for. I also participate in challenges with my Fitbit to keep me motivated. If you change up your fitness routine on a regular basis, your body will wake up to the new challenges. Find work outs you love to do. I’m not a runner, but I don’t mind an Elliptical, or walking at a steep incline on the treadmill. Ask me to run, and I may just run away!
  • Don’t wait until the last minute- start early! Whatever you do, do not crash diet and start 3-a-days at the gym two weeks before auditions! It will never work, and you you can’t maintain that for an entire season! If you choose to live the life of a professional dancer, choose the lifestyle as well. It’s definitely okay to splurge every now and then…we only live once, drink the milkshake!!! But you don’t get a taco for every burpee you do! Balance your clean eating and new challenges with enjoying all the things you love. You can do it!!
