Callie’s Corner: #WorkoutWednesday Audition Tip from Former Mavs Dancer, Whitney Foster

Hey there, friends! We are halfway through the week, which means it’s time for  #WorkoutWednesday! Today’s guest article is by former Dallas Mavericks Dancer, Whitney Foster. Whitney danced for the Dallas Mavericks for four seasons and now teaches pro league prep classes at DFC Headquarters Community Center in Plano:

One of the biggest pieces of advice I like to convey to women who are looking to audition for professional cheer and dance teams is to focus on stamina. Your stamina is going to be a big deal because at auditions, the judges are going to want to see you perform more than one time. Because you’re going to be performing the audition routine over and over again, you don’t want to be is the girl who is sucking air and looking completely out of shape!

Tip to Increase Stamina: Running/Dance Intervals

Dancing stamina is completely different from cheer and track stamina. Let’s face it, it’s often harder to perform a routine full out than it is to run a mile!

That said, one of the best ways to increase your stamina for auditions is to do the following:
Step 1: Create a playlist with all the songs you know dances to
Step 2: Get on the treadmill and run for 3-4 minutes
Step 3: Jump off of the treadmill and perform your whole routine FULL OUT
Step 4: Jump back on the treadmill for 3-4 minutes
Step 5: Jump back off of the treadmill and perform a different routine FULL OUT
Step 6: Repeat until you have exhausted yourself!
*If you’re feeling brave or feel like you need more of a push, kick the incline up on your runs*

These intervals will not only help you get in shape, they will also be key in helping you build your stamina. Don’t forget to come to my prep class for more audition tips! Happy training!
